Broad Range of Courses

Students at St. Mary’s receive an education that strengthens all aspects of life – intellectual, physical, and spiritual.

This multi-faceted approach ensures your student achieves the most of their potential.

Our core curriculum includes Theology, English, History, Science, Mathematics, and Foreign Language.

Our electives in fine art include Painting, Drawing, Clay Forms, and Music & Drama. We also offer the following electives in various disciplines: Psychology, Anatomy & Physiology, Oceanography, Journalism, Creative Writing, Accounting, Business, Statistics, Forensics, Engineering, Personal Finance, History through the Novel, Pop Culture, and Law & Criminal Justice.

Class Level Expectations

College Prep
Students enrolled in courses at this level will build on a strong foundation of content and skills. Courses are rigorous and require consistent effort for students to achieve at the highest level. Class time will be spent on mastery of core content and skills with some exposure to advanced content and skills. Students are expected to synthesize and analyze content with active teacher-directed support. Outside coursework is designed to reinforce the content and skills learned in class. Students will develop the organization needed to balance both short-term and long-term assignments throughout these courses.

Honors
Students who are recommended for courses at this level have strong academic skills. These courses are fast-paced, rigorous, and require consistent effort for students to achieve at the highest level. In addition to developing core content, class time will be spent working on advanced content and skills. Students are expected to synthesize and analyze content with teacher-directed support. Outside coursework is designed to advance the curriculum and provide skill development. Students should possess the strong organizational skills needed to balance both short-term and long-term assignments throughout the course. An honors level course is designed to dive deeper into the subject matter and will require the students develop better critical thinking skills in order to gain a better understanding of the material.

Advanced Placement
Advanced Placement classes at St. Mary’s High School are accelerated, college level courses that are offered to approved students. These classes are typically open to students in grades 11 and 12, but exceptions can be made for sophomores on a case-by-case basis. Students that take these classes should be ready to take on the demands of a challenging course, have met the criteria for admittance, understand the expectations and the cost involved, commit to taking the AP Exam, and have approval from the teacher, parent, and administration.

AP Students must:

Have a good attendance record. The amount of material covered each day will require daily participation.

Have successfully completed all prerequisites.

Complete the AP summer reading and all assignments by the beginning of the school year. Failure to complete the assignments in their entirety by the first day of school will result in the student being removed from the Advanced Placement class.

Submit the commitment form signed by the student, his/her parents, the AP teacher, and administrators.

Commit to taking the Advanced Placement Exam in May of 2022 for a fee of $94.00 per exam. This fee must be paid through the FACTS billing system by November 2021.
